1. Go Snorkeling
Snorkeling is an activity you shouldn’t miss if you’re visiting Oahu. Hanauma Bay, in particular, offers a remarkable experience for snorkelers. It is renowned for its crystal-clear waters that reveal an array of colorful coral reefs and marine life. In addition, the bay houses more than 400 fish species, including butterfly fish and parrotfish. Apart from snorkeling, you can enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the city skyline above the sea.
For a more adventurous experience, Shark’s Cove is an excellent choice. It’s a favorite among tourists who want to get close to the local marine life. The shallow waters here are home to various reef sharks, including blacktip and whitetip reef sharks. It’s an opportunity to witness the beauty of nature.
After your snorkeling adventure, take time to appreciate the beautiful sunsets over the bay. But always remember to check the ocean conditions before jumping in. The waves can be unpredictable and may get rough at times.
2. Learn About Hawaiian Culture
Discover the rich ancient culture of Hawaii by spending a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center. This living museum allows you to engage with locals, participate in traditional activities, and uncover artifacts from centuries past. Explore seven Polynesian villages, each representing a unique island culture, including Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, Tahiti, and Hawaii.
The Polynesian Cultural Center also hosts an event calendar and thrilling stage performances, such as the HĀ: Breath of Life Show, featuring local Hawaiian fire dancers for a spectacular night show.
For another immersive experience in traditional Hawaiian culture, visit Kualoa Ranch, one of Hawaii’s oldest working ranches. Here, you can explore historical sites, take one of their guided tours, such as the Jurassic Adventure Tour, and see the filming location for Jurassic Park.
3. Take a Stroll Through the Rainforest
Have you heard about the rainforests in Oahu? My wife Amanda and I love two of them – Manoa Falls and Waimea Valley.
Manoa Falls is easily accessible from Honolulu and provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. You can take a stroll through its lush rainforest trails, surrounded by towering bamboo plants and streams cascading down the mountain. This journey’s highlight is Manoa Falls, which stands nearly 150 feet tall. It’s a magnificent sight to behold!
Waimea Valley is another beautiful rainforest located in the northern part of Oahu. It’s home to various flora and fauna, including rare endangered species. Take your time walking through its lush trails and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Be sure to check out Waimea Falls, where you can swim and enjoy the awe-inspiring views of the surrounding valley.
Whether you choose Manoa Falls or Waimea Valley, make sure to have your phone handy. These rainforests are filled with stunning sights that you’ll want to capture. Don’t forget the bug spray!
4. Enjoy Water Sports
If you’re planning a visit to Hawaii, make sure to experience the breathtaking Pacific Ocean. For an exceptional adventure, consider joining one of the many tour companies in Oahu for stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking. These companies offer knowledgeable guides who prioritize your safety and ensure a memorable time. Moreover, you’ll discover some of the most stunning beaches on the island.
For those who crave an adrenaline rush, shark cage diving is a must-try. This unique experience takes you to the deep sea of Hawaii, giving you a close-up view of some of its most intimidating predators. You’ll witness tiger sharks, hammerhead sharks, and other menacing creatures as they patrol their underwater domain. This unforgettable encounter will stay with you for years to come.
Whether you prefer stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, or shark cage diving, Oahu has a water sport that will leave you breathless. So gather your equipment and get ready to explore the vast and mesmerizing Pacific Ocean!
5. Taste Local Cuisine
When on a trip, exploring local cuisine is always a must-do, especially when it’s something we can’t find back home in the San Francisco Bay Area. Hawaiian cuisine, in particular, is a rich and diverse culinary experience that offers unforgettable flavors ranging from laulau to shave ice.
Helena’s Hawaiian Food in Kalihi is a must-visit for those seeking authentic Hawaiian cuisine. The James Beard Foundation has recognized this charming restaurant as an American Classics award recipient and is famous for its mouthwatering kalua pig, lomi salmon, squid luau, and poi.
Duke’s Waikiki is a fantastic option if you’re looking for a lively atmosphere. My wife Amanda and I celebrated her birthday in 2021, and we loved dining outside with the stunning backdrop of Waikiki Bay. Duke’s Waikiki offers a unique dining experience with live music and breathtaking ocean views. In addition, the restaurant is renowned for its fresh seafood dishes, such as the mahimahi tacos and poke bowls.
Another personal favorite of ours is Adela’s Country Eatery in Kaneohe. Their menu features a delightful combination of traditional Hawaiian and Filipino dishes. A must-try dish is their lechon over local homemade malunggay noodles and garlic butter, which is deep-fried pork belly seasoned with herbs and spices.
The vibrant culinary scene in Hawaii is just one reason why Oahu is a must-visit destination. With so many mouthwatering options, your taste buds will surely be in for a treat!
6. View a Breathtaking Sunset
Watching the sunset is an ideal way to relax and end a day in Hawaii. Among the most famous sunsets in the world are those found in Oahu, particularly at Waikiki Beach. Take a stroll along the beach or have dinner with family or friends at nearby restaurants, like Duke’s Waikiki (remember to book a reservation!).
For a more private experience, visit Kailua Beach Park. This serene beach is known for its tranquil and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and kayaking. During golden hour, picnic on the shoreline and marvel at the magnificent view of the sun setting over Oahu’s horizon.
No matter where you go in Oahu, the Hawaiian sunset is always worth seeing. So, make time for it during your visit and capture this magical moment of tranquility and serenity.
